A Book of Condolence for folk singer Dolores Keane will open at Galway County Hall tomorrow.

The renowned Galway musician died peacefully in her sleep at her home in Caherlistrane yesterday. She was 72.

Keane was widely regarded as one of the leading voices in Irish traditional and folk music, both as a founding member of De Dannan and through her solo career.

The Cathaoirleach of Galway County Council, Councillor David Collins, will open the book, which will be available for signing during normal office hours over the coming days.

Paying tribute to the singer, Councillor Collins said she had made a major contribution to the development and international reach of Irish music.

Expressing his sympathies to her family and friends, he said Dolores Keane had "one of the most distinctive and respected voices" and that she brought "the music and spirit of County Galway to audiences around the world".

Keane was also known to a wider audience through her appearance on A Woman's Heart, the best-selling Irish album which helped introduce female Irish artists to a new generation of listeners.

Her rendition of Caledonia remains one of her best-known recordings.
