Bridgerton: Can Benedict redeem himself in part two?

Luke Thompson has suggested Benedict's "Be my mistress" proposal in Bridgerton season four comes from fear of being "all in". At the same time, co-star Yerin Ha says part two focuses on Sophie’s "internal obstacles" and why she will not let love in.

The line became one of the biggest talking points from the first half of the season, with Thompson saying Benedict is "probably quite worried about the idea of really being all in with someone". He suggested that, on a deeper level, Benedict’s hesitation can be linked to what he has witnessed in his family life.

Thompson also said there is an element of Benedict thinking it might be "the best thing" he can offer in that moment, adding that "in the spur of the moment, you just say things".

He said part of the point of scenes like that is that audiences will read them differently, with viewers interpreting what Benedict says, and how he says it, in "all sorts of different ways".

Ha, who plays Sophie Baek, addressed the idea of redemption when asked what Benedict has to do in part two. "Without spoiling anything", she said she believes he "possibly can redeem himself".

But Ha said the more interesting story for her is Sophie’s internal journey. "Part two is more about Sophie’s internal obstacles she’s yet to overcome, the psychology behind why she won’t let love in," she said.

Ha added that there is "so much self-work" Sophie still needs to do "before she can let someone in".

Bridgerton Season 4, Part 2, is available now on Netflix.
