Written, recorded, and self-produced between her family home in Ireland and Barcelona, the EP stands as both "an inward reckoning and an act of release."
Rita is joined by the percussion of Robbie Perry (Rita's father, and member of band Dead Can Dance), Caimin Gilmore’s double bass, and Peter Broderick on strings, and Pep Gol on trumpet and banjo from Jonny Pickett (DUG).
Tell us three things about yourself . . .
I’m an Irish/Catalan artist. My debut EP is called Kill Your Darlings and will be released in March.
How would you describe your music?
There’s an ethereal, dream pop quality to it while still being grounded and driven by its root instrumentation. I suppose you could use words like atmospheric folk pop or baroque pop.
Who are your musical inspirations?
I listened to a lot of Neil Young and Karen Dalton growing up. Billie Holiday and Aretha Franklin were strong fixtures of the household too along with Kate Bush. So was Manu Chao, Amadou and Miriam, Tinariwen and just too many to name now. These years, I've been really inspired by the likes of Aldous Harding and honestly, by a lot of amazing musicians around me who I happen to be friends with.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
Sean Kingston. People used their phone torches instead of lighters and I immediately fell out of love with the situation because I didn’t have a phone yet. Plus I prefer a warmer, soft atmospheric lighting vibe to a gig.
What was the first record you ever bought?
An original pressing of Lady in Satin by Billie Holiday for one euro in a car booth sale.
What’s your favourite song right now?
Dream Big or Less Than Nothing from Soda Blonde’s live album with the National Symphony Orchestra.
Favourite lyric of all time?
"Doesn’t mean that much to me to mean that much to you" - Neil Young. I think it’s the simplicity of the wording while still sounding like a riddle, to tell someone that you couldn’t care less.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
In A Sentimental Mood - John Coltrane and Duke Ellington.
Where can people find your music/more information?
You can best support me by buying my music on Bandcamp when the EP has been released. That has a huge impact for me and I really appreciate it. Otherwise, my music is on all the usual streaming platforms. Preferably people will use something more ethical than Spotify, like Tidal, Apple Music, etc. but it’s on there for now. You can follow me for updates on my socials @rita_perry_
