Behind the music - EvieB

EvieB
EvieB

Irish singer songwriter EvieB has released her new single, Living in a Standstill. We asked her the BIG questions . . .

EvieB (Eve Buckley) grew up immersed in music - her father is renowned saxophonist Richie Buckley, who has recorded and played with Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, The Cranberries, Christy Moore and Sinéad O'Connor, and her grandfather, Philip O’Brien, is a highly respected pianist.

EvieB has performed with and supported Mary Black, Mundy and Mary Coughlan, and also shared the stage with artists such as Sharon Shannon, Cait O’Riordan, and Camille O’Sullivan.

She has been working with producer John Reynolds (Sinéad O’Connor, Peter Gabriel, U2) and speaking about Living in a Standstill, she says, "The song explores the feeling of being stuck in a rut, of questioning progress and direction in life.

"It speaks particularly to the uncertainty of pursuing a career in the creative industry, where the future can feel unpredictable and security hard to grasp.

"The track was inspired by conversations I’ve had with people across all ages and professions, which revealed just how universal this sense of unease and stagnation is.

"It’s a feeling that transcends career paths, prompting reflection on where it originates and how deeply it’s embedded in society."

EvieB will release her debut album later this year.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

For downtime, I love going out walking to the countryside or by the sea.

I have matching tattoos with my besties.

I grew up in a family of Jazz musicians.

How would you describe your music?

I would have probably described my music as contemporary/pop before and now releasing new music, I would probably describe it more contemporary/ballad.

Who are your musical inspirations?

I would say my top three inspirations are Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison and Adele. Both their lyric and melodic writing really coincide with each other and I love how their lyrics are so personal but could also be universal to anyone listening to it.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

My first gig was Britney Spears in The Point (now 3Arena). She was amazing! I remember getting all dressed up and wearing a bit of make-up for the first time. I was probably the youngest kid there!

What was the first record you ever bought?

My first record was Adele 21 by Adele. I was 11 years old and had never been through a break-up but somehow felt every single lyric from that album! I was quite dramatic as a child especially when belting out Someone Like You at every family gathering.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Ooh that’s really hard! I’m really liking a Scottish singer/songwriter called Katie Gregson-Macleod and her song James is absolutely gorgeous from her most recent EP so I think that song.

Favourite lyric of all time?

"I could drink a case of you, darling, I would still be on my feet" - A Case of You by Joni Mitchell. I think it’s such a beautiful way of describing how the deep/meaningful relationships you have, you can never get tired or overwhelmed by.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Blue is the Eye by Ye Vagabonds. It’s an incredible song musically and lyrically, I would listen to it in any mood!

Where can people find your music/more information?

I’m on Instagram and Spotify under EvieB if you wanted to check me out!
