Grammy award-winning artists Residente and Bad Bunny are teaming up on a new historical drama about Puerto Rico.
René Pérez Joglar, known professionally as Residente, will direct Porto Rico, described by the film's producers as an "epic Caribbean western and historical drama" inspired by true events.
Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, is set to take the lead role, with Viggo Mortensen, Javier Bardem and Edward Norton also attached to star. Further casting is due to be announced.
In a statement, Residente said he had wanted to make a film about Puerto Rico since childhood, adding: "Puerto Rico’s true history has always been surrounded by controversy. This film is a reaffirmation of who we are, told with the intensity and honesty that our history deserves."
Residente co-wrote the script with Alexander Dinelaris, the Oscar-winning screenwriter behind Birdman.
The project is being produced through 1868 Studios and Class 5 Films, with Norton also signed on as a producer. Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu is among the executive producers, while Live Nation Studios is backing the film, according to a statement issued by the company.
No details have been announced about when Porto Rico will begin shooting or when it might be released.
