The focus track on their new EP is DTF, and the band, who have shared stages with acts such as P-Funk, Al Green, Mavis Staples, KC & The Sunshine Band, and Cheap Trick, say, "Anagrams can stand for lots of things. Like BDE, or FBI. In this case, we are slingin’ some Down Town Funk your way. DTF. Any other insights into the very, very deep lyrics are entirely your own."
Tell us three things about yourself . . .
Mummy Cass: We’re funky, we’re mouldy, and we’re a little naughty.
How would you describe your music?
Mummy Cass: Terrifying funk from beyond the grave. Basically, a stew of rock, funk, and just a pinch of jazz. The lyrics are a towering obelisk of sexual innuendo.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Mummy Cass: Sly and the Family Stone, The Commodores, Ohio Players, The Meters, Stevie Wonder, Mavis Staples, Otis Redding, P-funk, Average White Band, Prince, Diana Ross, James Brown..
What was the first gig you ever went to?
Mummy Cass: Well, those were all in ancient Egypt, but that’s another story. Ever since our rediscovery in 2000AD, we’ve seen a lot, and even got to share the stage with some of our favourites. Mavis Staples, P-funk, Al Green, Cheap Trick.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Mummy Cass: I’m pretty sure it was The Meters by The Meters.
What’s your favourite song right now?
Mummy Cass: We’re going full McCartney on ya, ya dig? It’s our new song Road Trip, on our new Road Trip EP, out now, baby.
Favourite lyric of all time?
Midnight Mummy: James Brown when he goes "ungh!" Says more than most folks will in their whole life. Is it a lyric? I don’t know, but I say it counts!
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Mummy Cass: Ooh, that hurts to even think about. Remember, we are 5,000 years old. We can tell you first hand that no matter what it is, no matter how good it is, you do not want to listen to it that long. You just don’t. But if you really had no choice, I’m going with our own song Eternity, off our first album. It helps that it is seven minutes long.
