Formed in 2021, LA LOM are the instrumental trio of LA natives Zac Sokolow (guitar), Jake Faulkner (bass), and Nicholas Baker (drums/Percussion) and they blend the sounds of Cumbia Sonidera, 60s soul ballads, and classic romantic boleros.
LA LOM started out reimagining instrumental renditions of the soulful ballads from the 1950s and '60s that they grew up listening to on LA’s oldies station, K-EARTH 101 and drawing inspiration from Smokey Robinson, Aaron Neville, and Brenda and the Tabulations.
Tell us three things about yourself . . .
Nic: Met my mentor when I was eight, and that was when I learned to play the congas. That’s when I knew that I wanted to make music like we are in LA LOM for the rest of my life.
How would you describe your music?
Jake: We play Instrumental music that draws from our Los Angeles roots, Latin, soul, and rock n roll. It’s very rhythmic, joyful and danceable.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Zac: We started out playing all around Los Angeles, first playing background music, and then for a lot of dancers at bars and parties. Our music is very inspired by a lot of the musicians in LA that we played with, and the music that’s popular in the city. There’s a group of musicians called the Blasting Company that’s always been a big inspiration.
Cumbia is a huge part of what we do. Cumbia from Colombia, Peru, Mexico. In Mexico there are some modern groups like Sonido Gallo Negro, and Son Rompe Pera that are really great. There’s a group from El Paso/Juarez called Radio Malilla that we love.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
Zac: I grew up playing gigs with my dad. I’ve been going to his gigs since before I can remember. One of the first ones we played together was at a banjo and fiddle contest.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Jake: The LA LOM four-song EP, on yellow vinyl, exclusively available on our European winter tour.
What’s your favourite song right now?
Jake: Fried Neckbones and Some Home Fries by Willie Bobo
Favourite lyric of all time?
Jake: Wepa.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Zac: The Auld Triangle.
