Born and bred in St Catharines near Niagara Falls and currently resident in Stratford, Ontario, he has released 17 studio albums to date, including Grand Opera Lane (1991), Ron Sexsmith (1995), Retriever (2004), The Vivian Line (2023), and Hangover Terrace (2025).
He has collaborated with the likes of Daniel Lanois, Mitchell Froom, Ane Brun, Tchad Blake, and Bob Rock. His songwriting appears on albums by Rod Stewart, Michael Bublé, k.d. lang, Emmylou Harris, Nick Lowe and Feist.
Ron (61) describes his most recent album, Hangover Terrace, as a metaphor for the emotional residue left by the pandemic years.

I’m a bit of a luddite, I don’t own a cell phone, I love listening to records.
How would you describe your music?
Folk/pop, I suppose.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Buddy Holly, Gordon Lightfoot, Ray Davies, Bill Withers.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
Elton John in 1976 at Rich Stadium, New York.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Elton John’s Captain Fantastic.
What’s your favourite song right now?
I don’t really know any new music, although I am listening to It’s Impossible by Perry Como.
Favourite lyric of all time?
The Faith by Leonard Cohen.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Perhaps Dear Prudence by The Beatles.
