Reality TV star Spencer Pratt has announced he is running for mayor of Los Angeles.

The 42-year-old, best known for appearing on The Hills, announced at a "They Let Us Burn" rally in Pacific Palisades, held to mark one year since the Palisades Fire began.

Pratt and his family lost their home in the fire. Local media reported that 12 people died and more than 6,800 structures were destroyed.

Speaking at the rally, Pratt criticised the city and state response and questioned the records of Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom.

"Business as usual is a death sentence for Los Angeles, and I'm done waiting for someone to take real action. That’s why I am running for mayor," he told the crowd.

Pratt's The Hills co-star and wife Heidi Montag also spoke at the event, saying: "We need accountability. Over the last year, I have watched him work tirelessly, not just for my family but for yours.

"He has been relentless in exposing the negligence of the state, the city and the LADWP. He's not doing this to make friends. In fact, he's losing a lot of people he once thought were friends. But he cannot stay silent in the face of injustice."

In a statement carried by US media, Douglas Herman, Bass's campaign strategist, dismissed Pratt’s announcement as a publicity move and accused him of spreading misinformation about the fire.

Los Angeles’ primary nominating election is scheduled for 2 June 2026, with a general municipal election on 3 November if required.
