The Killarney-born actress won the Critics Choice Award for Best Actress in California on Sunday night for her performance in the historical drama Hamnet, which is based on the book of the same name by Coleraine-born author Maggie O'Farrell.

At the awards, Jessie Buckley paid tribute to Hamnet director Chloé Zhao and her co-stars, fellow Irish actor Paul Mescal and the English actress Emily Watson.

She also mentioned her mountaineer brother Killian during her acceptance speech.

Speaking on The Oliver Callan Show on RTÉ Radio 1, Jessie Buckley's father, Tim, said: "We take these things in our stride down in Kerry, now! 'Tis no bother to us at all! We're always hungry for a win, anyway, but we won't count our chickens before they hatch."

"The joy that she had in receiving the award was infectious, enough," he told the show. "And it was lovely as well that she brought up Killian."

Jessie Buckley is nominated in the Best Actress category at this weekend's Golden Globes in the US and is among the favourites to win the Best Actress Oscar in March.

The Oscar nominations will be announced on Thursday, 22 January.

If Jessie Buckley wins on Sunday, 15 March, she will become the first Irish woman to be honoured with the Best Actress Oscar.

"She got a nomination for The Lost Daughter [in 2022], which kind of came out of the blue, and there was no campaign," Tim Buckley recalled of his daughter's Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination four years ago.

"I think she's remained herself throughout it all. It wouldn't be her favourite thing now to do [the awards circuit], you know? But she has to kind of psych herself up like a boxer before she gets out there. But once she enters the ring, I think she does me and the country proud."

Tim Buckley said his daughter's husband and child keep her grounded and put "it all into perspective".

"We'll hope for the best. We'll keep our fingers crossed. But look, it's a fantastic honour to get nominated for these things, and at the end of the day, it's about encouraging people to go out there, have a nice night out."

"There'll be no pressure," he continued. "Pressure is a different matter. It'll be a joyous occasion.

"We'll have our fingers crossed, and we'll pluck down the rosary beads again or something like that - no, we won't!

"It's great to be there, and I'm sure there'll be a lot of fun had by everybody. And it'll be a lovely thing for everybody to gather around and see what happened and have a bit of conversation about things."

Hamnet opens in cinemas on Friday, 9 January.

It "tells the powerful love story that inspired the creation of Shakespeare's timeless masterpiece, Hamlet".

Paul Mescal plays William Shakespeare, and Jessie Buckley plays Agnes, his wife.

Tim Buckley described it as "a funny twist of fate" that two Irish actors are playing "the most quintessential English roles" in Hamnet.

"We're good at that," he said. "We invade in our own little way!"

"A lot of people now, with streaming and all these things, have got out of the habit of going to the cinema," he said.

"There's nothing like seeing a film on the big screen. We've kind of lost it a little bit compared to when we were young, and there'd be queues around the block.

"But these films now that are coming out, and especially when you've two fantastic Irish stars and [an] Irish writer, and a lot of other Irish people involved in this film, it's a lovely incentive to get into the cinema again."

Asked whether he would attend the Oscars, Tim Buckley replied: "Being honest about it, it wouldn't appeal to me - unless it was a nice Irish bar in a nice, dark corner!

"I'd go to the afters, alright! I'd have to dress up for the other thing, now. The neck on me might be choked by some Dickie bow or something like that!"
