Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley will walk the red carpet in Dublin this weekend for the Irish premiere of Chloé Zhao's acclaimed Shakespeare drama Hamnet.
The Kildare and Kerry stars will attend the special screening at the Light House Cinema on Saturday, 13 December, alongside director and co-screenwriter Zhao and author Maggie O’Farrell, who adapted her own award-winning novel for the screen. The film, which reimagines the life of William Shakespeare and his family, will be released in Irish cinemas on 9 January.
Set in 1580s England, Hamnet follows impoverished Latin tutor William Shakespeare as he falls for free-spirited Agnes. Their intense relationship leads to marriage and three children, but as Shakespeare’s theatre career takes him to London, Agnes is left to hold the family together at home. When tragedy strikes, the couple’s grief reshapes their lives.
Earlier this week, both Buckley and Mescal received Golden Globe nominations for their performances in Hamnet, with Buckley shortlisted for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama and Mescal nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
The film itself is also in the running in key categories, including Best Director for Zhao and Best Screenplay for Zhao and O’Farrell, cementing its status as a serious contender in this year’s awards season.
