Tell us three things about yourself . . .
I wanted to be a professional soccer player when I was a young kid and play for Liverpool FC but around the 14 or 15-year-old mark, I started playing guitar and listening to rock, metal and grunge. I was hooked, obsessed really, soccer took a back seat fairly quickly after that to my soccer coach’s dismay.
I love all music, a broad statement I know, but mainly guitar based music or anything with a cool riff or lead solo in any genre. My Dad introduced me to The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix when I was quite young so maybe it is this influence that gave me my love of guitar.
This year I got to release an album on vinyl with Chiral (The Karnival of Chaos) and tour in Germany which was a dream come true.
How would you describe your music?
I am a rock guy, really. Guitar music moves me, but my latest song, All This Love, is a bit more mellow, a more real life vibe, there is definitely an influence of The Beatles and maybe Sting and The Police in there too. I would describe it as blending catchy hooks with storytelling. Because I like all kinds of music you never know what you will find in there.
Who are your musical inspirations?
No.1 and the OG - The Beatles, John, Paul, George and Ringo, Phil Lynott, Sting, Kurt Cobain, Jerry Cantrell, Tony Iommi, Chris Cornell, Brian May, James Hetfield, Tobias Forge.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
Megadeth in the SFX in Dublin 1995 with Corrosion of Conformity supporting. This was my first gig and first time crowd surfing it was awesome. MTV’s Headbangers Ball were filming the show, I actually could see myself in the crowd when shown on MTV. Pretty cool.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Elton John best of double album, not a bad start.
What’s your favourite song right now?
I have two that I am playing non-stop at the moment - Red lake Magick’s Far Away Dreaming - a lovely melody and nice lyrics, one for the Christmas holidays. The second song is Birds by Turnstile - it takes the roof off; you just can’t help jumping to this one.
Favourite lyric of all time?
The powerful lyrics of Bob Marley and the Wailers’ Redemption Song: "Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, None but ourselves can free our minds, Have no fear for atomic energy, Cause none of them can stop the time, How long shall they kill our prophets, While we stand aside and look, Some say it's just a part of it, We've got to fulfil the book".
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
That’s easy - Strawberry Fields Forever by The Beatles. It’s the perfect song.
