Behind the music - Magnetic Skies

Magnetic Skies
Magnetic Skies

Portsmouth synthpop collective Magnetic Skies have released their second album, Fragments. We asked lead vocalist and keys player Simon Kent the BIG questions . . .

Initially setting out as a duo in 2019, Magnetic Skies was born as a studio-based project created by Simon and Jo Womar and inspired by a shared love of 80s synth-driven post-punk.

Speaking about Fragments, Simon says: "I was drawn by themes of modern alienation and emotional burnout - I hope these songs reflect a move from tension and despair toward something more hopeful. Piecing life back together, one step at a time."

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I tend to keep all the musical instruments I buy/acquire.

I have just bought a Tascam portable recorder to collect sounds for future songs.

I write very slowly, sometimes painfully.

How would you describe your music?

Electro-retro, futuristic, expansive.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Too many to mention - I take inspiration from everywhere. But my core touchstones are Eno, Kraftwerk, Bowie, Roxy Music, David Sylvian, Talk Talk, Kate Bush, and Japan. I listen to tons of contemporary music, but the historical names are easier references.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Depeche Mode. It blew me away.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Something by Abba. Arrival, I think.

What's your favourite song right now?

The Fate of Ophelia by Taylor Swift, I can't get it out of my head. She must be doing something right...

Favourite lyric of all time?

"The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had" - Moby.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Maria by David Sylvian.

Where can people find your music/more information?

Website, Facebook, Spotify, Instagram - everywhere @magneticskies
