Behind the music - Pavey Ark

Pavey Ark
Pavey Ark

Hull-based folk collective Pavey Ark have released their second album, More Time, More Speed. We asked Neil Thomas of the band the BIG questions . . .

The band worked with Adrian McNally (The Unthanks) and Paul Butler (The Bees/Michael Kiwanuka) for More Time, More Speed, which was self-recorded in a converted farm building near Hull.

The album is "a concept record built around time, how it bends, distorts, and shapes our lives, with songs that range from pandemic reflections (The Go Slow), to climate collapse (Epoch), to the digital age (All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace)."

Tell us three things about yourself . .

I was born in Hull in East Yorkshire. It's had a lot of stick over the years but it's a really great city and there's lots of creativity.

I occasionally write songs in dreams.

I can only whistle by sucking rather than blowing.

How would you describe your music?

I'd like to think it's quite beautiful and expansive. "Beautiful cinematic indie-folk" perhaps

Who are your musical inspirations?

Older artists that inspired my new album are Nick Drake, Rodriguez, and Love. Modern artists I love and who inspire me are Aldous Harding, Laura Marling, Andrew Bird, Father John Misty, Radiohead.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Saint Etienne at Hull University. I’d never heard of the support act so we stayed in the bar drinking. The support act was Pulp :)

What was the first record you ever bought?

Def Leppard - Pyromania.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Jacob Alon - Fairy in a Bottle. He played the same stage as us at SXSW 2025 in the St David's Historic Sanctuary venue in Austin and he was mesmerising.

Favourite lyric of all time?

Cherry Ghost - Dead Man’s Suit. I love how the very first line comes in and it feels like you've joined a discussion half way through; "My heart ain’t as broken as that implies"

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Alone Again Or by Love.
