Adele is to make her big-screen acting debut in Cry to Heaven, the new film from designer-turned-director Tom Ford.

US entertainment trade publication The Hollywood Reporter says Cry to Heaven is an adaptation of the 1982 Anne Rice novel of the same name.

The story follows "a Venetian noble and a maestro castrato, with both attempting to succeed in the opera world" in the 18th Century.

Ford, whose credits include Nocturnal Animals and A Single Man, has assembled an all-star cast for Cry to Heaven with Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Colin Firth, Paul Bettany, Thandiwe Newton, Hunter Schafer, Owen Cooper, and Irish actors Ciarán Hinds and Daryl McCormack also on board.
