Cillian Murphy and director Myrid Carten among British Independent Film Awards nominees

Steve star Cillian Murphy and A Want in Her director Myrid Carten are among the nominees for this year's British Independent Film Awards (BIFA).

Murphy, who also produced the school-based drama Steve, is nominated in the Best Lead Performance category alongside Robert Aramayo (I Swear), Frank Dillane (Urchin), David Jonsson (Wasteman), Jennifer Lawrence (Die My Love), and Harry Melling (Pillion).

Donegal filmmaker Myrid Carten is nominated in three categories for her acclaimed documentary A Want in Her, which focuses on her family.

Review: A Want in Her is an immersive, deeply personal debut film

Carten's feature debut is shortlisted for Best Feature Documentary, where she is nominated with A Want in Her producers Tadhg O'Sullivan, Róisín Geraghty, and Kat Mansoor.

Carten is also nominated for Best Debut Director - Feature Documentary and The Raindance Maverick Award.

The coming-of-age drama My Father's Shadow, which includes the Dublin-based Element Pictures among its producers, leads this year's BIFA shortlist with 12 nominations.

The offbeat romantic comedy Pillion, which also includes Element Pictures among its producers, has 10 nominations.

Lifehack's Irish director and co-writer Ronan Corrigan is nominated in the Best Editing category with his colleague Aleksandr Kletsov for their work on Corrigan's acclaimed debut thriller.

London-born screenwriter Eoin Doran is nominated with co-writer Hunter Andrews for their work on the crime-drama Wasteman.

Irish sound designer and editor Steve Fanagan is nominated with his colleague Stevie Haywood in the Best Sound Category for their work on the Daniel Day-Lewis and Sean Bean-starring drama Anemone, which is directed by Day-Lewis's son Ronan Day-Lewis.

Also of Irish interest are cinematographer Séamus McGarvey's nomination for his work on Die My Love and the nomination for Belfast's Queen's Film Theatre in the Cinema of the Year category.

The winners will be announced in the Roundhouse in London on Sunday 30 November.
