Universal Music Group has announced a new licensing deal with AI music generation startup Udio, with plans to launch an artificial intelligence-powered music creation platform next year.
The two companies confirmed they have also settled an ongoing copyright infringement case.
The new platform, due in 2026, will use generative AI trained only on authorised and licensed music, allowing users to customise, stream and share tracks in what Universal described as a "licensed and protected environment."
Universal said the agreement represents a "new chapter of innovation" in how technology and rightsholders collaborate, while ensuring that artists and songwriters are compensated for their work.
UMG Chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge said the deal showed the company's commitment to "foster a healthy commercial AI ecosystem" that benefits both creators and technology companies.
Udio CEO Andrew Sanchez said the partnership would help "redefine how AI empowers artists and fans."
