"I grew up listening to Fleetwood Mac, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Stevie Nicks," Mary says. "Music became my escape from trauma and my way of processing my past. On this album, I decided to bare all, sharing both my struggles and my triumphs."
Tell us three things about yourself . . .
I was born in Dallas, Texas. I moved to Memphis right before the third grade and have lived here ever since.
I was born on June 24 which makes me a Cancer. I share my birthday with Hope Sandoval and Mick Fleetwood.
I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of four.
How would you describe your music?
My music is heavily influenced by southern rock, soul, and blues music.
Who are your musical inspirations?
I grew up listening to artists such as Dolly Parton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Fleetwood Mac. They have been my biggest influences when it comes to my writing and sound.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
My very first gig was a local event in Memphis called Artober Fest with a line-up of local musicians, which I did as a solo show. It was a great first set because I was surrounded by supportive local artists.
What was the first record you ever bought?
It was Adele’s first album, 19. She is another artist that inspired me to write and follow my dreams.
What’s your favourite song right now?
Olivia Dean’s new song, Man I Need. It has been stuck in my head since its release and is just a great pop song.
Favourite lyric of all time?
"But time makes you bolder/Children get older/And I’m getting older too" - Landslide by Fleetwood Mac.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Fast Car by Tracy Chapman.
