The 2 Johnnies: 'Being from the country is universal'

Tipperary comedy duo The 2 Johnnies have spoken about the worldwide appeal of their podcast, saying "being from the country is universal".

Appearing on Oliver Callan's show on RTÉ Radio 1 on Monday morning, Johnny B and Johnny Smacks reflected on reaching the 400th episode of their popular podcast, which they started in 2016.

"Our one regret is that we don't have seasons, it has to go out every week," Johnny B joked. "It's like having a herd of cows to milk, it has to be done day in day out."

"It's the longest job I've ever had," Johnny Smacks interjected. "We're seven years fulltime since I gave up my job."

Johhny B said the podcast is all about "Irish stuff, getting in Irish stories and culture".

"Being from the country is universal," he continued. "There's culchies in all the Southern states of America and the same in Australia, there's a theme that connects us all universally.

"The love for our community, being proud of where you're from and trying to get those stories and characters out of the ground."

The 2 Johnnies Late Night Lock In returns on 23 October

The podcasting duo also spoke about the furore over the sponsored podcast they did for the Irish Prison Service.

They were paid nearly €25,000 to host a show on the attractions of working as a prison officer.

"It's the best advertising we ever got," Johnny B said. "It's been great, every business in the country is onto us looking for advertising."

Asked if they had any plans to do more sponsored posts for the government services, Johnny B said: "Sure I don't know, see what happens, we don't have anything in the book at the moment."

The 2 Johnnies will return in the third series of The 2 Johnnies Late Night Lock In, kicking off this Thursday, 23 October at 9:35pm on RTÉ2.
