A classically trained performer since childhood, Martello appeared on the stage of Carnegie Hall at the age of 13 as part of The Palestrina Choir, where he sang three solos as part of the larger ensemble.

Boat on the Water is his third single and was written from the perspective of a broken long–distance relationship.

Tell us three things about yourself?

I was born and bred in Sutton, Dublin. I'm recently 24 and over the past year, I’ve started releasing music under the name Martello, which is still a fairly new project for me.

How would you describe your music?

I’d describe it as alternative/indie folk, a blend of acoustic warmth and ambient textures. A lot of that comes from my background in choral singing in large cathedrals, mixed with more modern folk influences that shape the way I write and arrange songs.

Who are your musical inspirations?

So many, the likes of Bon Iver, Talos, Novo Amor, Bach, James Vincent McMorrow, Fleet Foxes, RY X. to name a few.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

The first gig I properly remember was seeing Ed Sheeran in the Phoenix Park when I was 16. It was also the first show I went to with my friends and I got the ticket for free which is always a plus.

What was the first record you ever bought?

When I was about 15 or 16, I bought Illmatic by Nas. I was really into 90s hip hop at the time, and my family had just gotten a record player, so that was my contribution to the collection.

What’s your favourite song right now?

A song called Babylon by Tamino. Also, Tailspin by my good friend Edwina Van Kuyk.

Favourite lyric of all time?

"At once, I knew I was not magnificent" - Holocene by Bon Iver.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Maybe, Landslide by Fleetwood Mac. It’s impossible to pick just one.

Where can people find your music/more information?

Martello on Spotify or thisismartello on all other social media platforms.
