The American actress Diane Keaton, best known for roles in Annie Hall, The Godfather, and Something's Gotta Give, has died at the age of 79.
Rizzoli, a publishing company that released several of the star's books, confirmed her death in a statement, calling her an "icon whose influence spanned film, fashion, and design".
Dori Rath, a producer and friend of Ms Keaton, also confirmed her passing to CBS News and The New York Times.
Diane Keaton's death was first reported by People magazine.
Ms Keaton died in her native California, and her loved ones have asked for privacy, a family spokesperson told the outlet.
The actress shot to fame in the 1970s with her role as Kay Adams in The Godfather trilogy, as well as her collaborations with Woody Allen.
She won a Best Actress Oscar for Mr Allen's influential film Annie Hall and became associated with the title character's menswear-centric wardrobe.
She made a total of eight films with Woody Allen, including 1979's Manhattan.
Diane Keaton was also a BAFTA winner for Annie Hall and a Golden Globe winner for Annie Hall and Something's Gotta Give.
Her many beloved films included Baby Boom, The First Wives Club, Father of the Bride, The Family Stone, and the Book Club movies. In 2017, she starred opposite Irish actor Brendan Gleeson in the comedy-drama Hampstead.
She was also nominated for Oscars for her roles in Something's Gotta Give, Marvin's Room, and Reds.
As a director, her credits included the films Heaven and Hanging Up, the series China Beach and Twin Peaks, and the promo videos for the Belinda Carlisle hits Heaven Is a Place on Earth and I Get Weak.
Paying tribute on Instagram, Belinda Carlisle said Diane Keaton "was such a talent and a big part of my career".
Alongside broken-heart emojis, the singer wrote: "She was kind and eccentric and I was blessed to know her. This is such a big loss…"
Diane Keaton's First Wives Club co-star Bette Midler wrote on Instagram: "The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died. I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me.
"She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was ... oh, la, lala!"
Paying tribute to her co-star on Instagram, The First Wives Club star Goldie Hawn wrote: "Diane, we aren't ready to lose you. You've left us with a trail of fairy dust, filled with particles of light and memories beyond imagination.
"How do we say goodbye? What words can come to mind when your heart is broken? You never liked praise, so humble, but now you can't tell me to 'shut up' honey. There was, and will be, no one like you.
"You stole the hearts of the world and shared your genius with millions, making films that made us laugh and cry in ways only you could.
"I was blessed to make First Wives Club with you, our days starting with coffee in the makeup trailer, laughing and joking, right through to the very last day of filming. It was a roller coaster of love."
Robert De Niro, who starred opposite Diane Keaton in Marvin's Room and The Big Wedding, said in a statement: "I am very sad to hear of Diane's passing. I was very fond of her, and the news of her leaving us has taken me totally by surprise. I was not expecting her to leave us. She will be missed. May she rest in peace."
Born Diane Hall in Los Angeles on 5 January, 1946, Diane Keaton's film debut was in 1970's Lovers and Other Strangers.
Her big break came in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather, as Kay, the girlfriend and then wife of Al Pacino's Michael Corleone, in 1972.
She reprised her role in 1974's The Godfather Part II and once more in 1990's The Godfather Part III.
Much of her career was defined by her many collaborations with Woody Allen, her one-time boyfriend, and Annie Hall was the signature character of her career to many of her fans.
People speculated that the movie was based on Keaton and Allen's relationship, and Keaton told The New York Times in 1977: "It's not true, but there are elements of truth in it."
She remained a supporter of Woody Allen after the allegation by Mia Farrow that he had abused their adopted daughter, Dylan.
Diane Keaton never married. She adopted a daughter, Dexter, in 1996 and a son, Duke, four years later.
In December 2024, she released her first-ever solo single, a song called First Christmas.
Her last Instagram post was for National Pet Day in the US in April and featured her dog, Reggie.
