RTÉ has announced a shake-up to its Radio 1 weekday schedule, with former Newstalk presenter Kieran Cuddihy taking over Liveline and Oliver Callan moving to an extended two-hour programme at 11am.

Today with David McCullagh will begin at 9am, Louise Duffy moves to mid-afternoon and Katie Hannon and Colm Ó Mongáin will take the helm of Drivetime from the earlier time of 4pm.

Rachael English will continue to present the News at One at lunchtime, reporting on the day's top regional, national and international stories.

There will also be a new daily sports show from 6pm.

The timeline for the changes has not been fully confirmed yet, but is expected to take place later this year.

Starting each weekday at 7am, Morning Ireland will continue to set the national agenda and two new presenters, who will join Audrey Carville and Gavin Jennings, will be announced in the coming weeks.

Speaking about the new schedule, RTÉ’s Director of Audio Patricia Monahan said: "This new schedule marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for RTÉ Radio 1.

"In line with our strategy, it has been designed to meet the changing listening habits of audiences, giving them the public service content they need across the day from breaking news to analysis and comment, music, chat and entertainment coming full circle in the late afternoon and evening with compelling discussion of the issues of the day from the world of news, sport and entertainment."

Ms Monahan said she is "also pleased to confirm that Sarah McInerney and Cormac Ó hEadhra will continue to be a regular presence on RTÉ and Radio 1. We look forward to sharing news of their new roles in the coming weeks".

Head of RTÉ Radio 1 Tara Campbell said: "This new schedule introduces some new and younger voices while seeing many of our award-winning presenters move into new presenting duties."

RTÉ also said that "following the sad death of our colleague Séan Rocks this summer, a separate announcement about the new presenter for Arena will be made at a later date."

The news comes after it was announced on Thursday that Ray D'Arcy would be leaving RTÉ Radio 1 after 11 years.

The broadcaster, who had presented a weekday afternoon show, said he was "hugely disappointed" with how RTÉ management handled his departure.
