Miley Cyrus has reflected on the intense backlash she received during her transformation from a child actress to a pop star and believes she was the "first person to ever be cancelled".

The 32-year-old singer, who rose to fame on the kids' show Hannah Montana, has opened up about the public's negative reaction to her shift from Disney icon to music sensation.

In an interview on CBS Sunday Morning, due to air on 5 October, Cyrus explained how she changed her image in the 2010s to fit a more mature look for her albums Can't Be Tamed and Bangerz.

"I was the first person to maybe ever be cancelled, I guess," she explained.

The Grammy award winner said while she received loads of criticism from the public, she was having a lot of fun.

"I didn't know until I was older, actually, how brutal it really was... It was very challenging for other people but for me, it was a good time.

"It looked fun and it was fun. So it wasn't until I was older that I realised how harsh [the reaction was]."

In the interview teaser, which was released via social media, Cyrus added: "I would never now, being where I am, ever look at someone in their 20s from the view of who I am now. But at the time, it was awesome."
