"I wrote Naïve after realising I'd spent too long stuck in relationships where I’m receiving breadcrumbs," Eva says. "It’s not a heartbreak song - it’s a wake-up song."
Heartache, Baby! unfolds as a short film trilogy "exploring the journey from naïveté, through heartbreak, and finally to acceptance - each single a chapter in a love story’s slow unravel".
"Heartache, Baby! is an ode to the relationships that shape us" she adds. "Not just the romantic ones, but friendships and family, too."
Tell us three things about yourself . . .
Writing is my love language - so thank god this is a written interview.
I’m stubborn as an ox (thanks for the inheritance, Grandad).
I see the best in everyone . . . which is either a superpower or my downfall.
How would you describe your music?
TikTok recently labelled me "#whitegirlmusicberlin" which I’ve decided to embrace. My sound is catchy, romantic, and reflective - indie pop/rock with touches of folk and country.
Who are your musical inspirations?
My EP Heartache, Baby! has a big '90s influence. I was feeling nostalgic for artists like Tori Amos, Alanis Morissette, and KT Tunstall.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
Either Jedward or Justin Bieber. I was deep in my fangirl era - no regrets, only memories.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Fall Out Boy - Infinity On High. I studied that lyric booklet like it was the bible. Shame we don’t have that kind of ritual with music anymore.
What’s your favourite song right now?
I’m obsessed with Wolf Alice’s new album, The Clearing. Just Two Girls is my favourite - it’s a female friendship song that I initially thought was an LGBTQ+ anthem. Turns out it’s not, but it’s still a feminist banger.
Favourite lyric of all time?
ABBA, of course. "What would life be? Without a song or a dance, where are we?" I love lyrics like this that capture universal truths - lines that traverse the human experience and connect us all, no matter who we are.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Something I could obsess over forever - probably Tori Amos’ Cornflake Girl. Those piano lines are like a puzzle I’d never stop playing with.
Where can people find your music/more information?
I’m Eva St Maria everywhere - socials and streaming. My debut single is out now and my EP is on the way.
