Paul Mescal has said he wants to protect his relationship with US singer Gracie Abrams "fundamentally".
The private couple were first romantically linked in June 2024 when they were spotted out together in London, and in May, Abrams attended the premiere of Mescal's new film The History of Sound at the Cannes Film Festival.
Abrams appeared to confirm their relationship when she posted a series of photos and videos of them together at Glastonbury in June, where she made her debut performing at the Somerset festival.
In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, the Maynooth native was asked if there was a particular moment that made them decide to take their relationship public.

There may be no actor better at playing emotional devastation. We met up with him in London to try to figure out why.

He replied: "I don't know how to answer that. I actually do have an answer, but everything to do with that is deeply precious to me... I want to protect those things fundamentally."
At another point in the interview, Mescal spoke about his desire to start a family at some stage.
"I love babies with very adult names," he said. "I would love to have a family. I'm not like, 'I want them tomorrow,’ but I would love to have kids."

The 29-year-old actor also spoke about his intensive preparations for playing Paul McCartney in director Sam Mendes' upcoming series of Beatles biopics.
"I don't think I’m chill, generally. When I’m around people that I love and feel safe, I like being silly - it’s a feeling that I don’t get a lot, and I like that - but I think, for the most part, I’m... maybe not intense, but slightly obsessive," he shared.
"I’m obsessed with the Beatles at the moment. It’s part of my job, but it’s also the way that my brain is wired. I’m excited about listening to music, writing music, absorbing music, going to shows, all of these things - they start with an intensity with the job and then kind of become my personality for a bit."
