Death of a Showjumper, 9.00pm, Sky Documentaries

All episodes streaming on NOW

When Katie Simpson, a talented jockey, died unexpectedly in 2020, the majority of the horse community in Northern Ireland accepted that she had taken her own life.

But a local journalist questioned the official conclusion.

Katie’s death triggered a memory of an old case she covered, a case with too many similarities to Katie's.

At the centre of her suspicions was Katie’s brother-in-law, an influential champion showjumper, jockey and horse trainer, Jonathan Creswell.

This three-part documentary features the investigators, Katie’s friends and family, and Jonathan Creswell’s circle, to reveal how a secret investigation ended in a high stakes murder trial with an ending that no one expected.

With personal accounts of the events that led up to Katie’s death and after it, the series gives unparalleled insight into a disturbing story of violence and coercive control within a tightly knit sporting community.

Freddie Flintoff's Field of Dreams, 8.10pm, BBC Two

Having created a cricket team like no other in his home town of Preston and taken them on a life-changing tour to India, Freddie Flintoff is determined to prove that his previous success wasn't a one-off.

He’s now set his sights on a much more ambitious plan, hoping to create several new teams of teenagers across the north west of England.

First, he heads to Liverpool and finds a club that is attracting teenagers for all the wrong reasons, so in an attempt to persuade local kids to give cricket a try, he visits a pupil referral unit, where he faces a tough crowd.

Freddie also travels to Blackpool, and after meeting a far more receptive bunch of girls, holds try-outs at a local cricket club. However, it’s not long before he’s completely out of his comfort zone, as he’s never coached females before.

Sunday Cinema

Witness for the Prosecution, 12.35pm, BBC Two

Billy Wilder is my favourite film director. Here’s a splendid way to spend a Sunday afternoon on the sofa.

As well as making loads of truly great films, his range was impressive, including comedies such as The Apartment and Some Like it Hot, to the more hardboiled Ace in the Hole and Double Indemnity.

This is Wilder's adaptation of Agatha Christie’s courtroom drama, starring Charles Laughton, Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich and Elsa Lanchester.

Laughton is great as he plays an ailing barrister who defies doctor's orders to defend a man accused of murdering his mistress.

The defendant is eventually acquitted but a series of surprise revelations convinces the lawyer that the verdict was the wrong one.
