Irish band Bagatelle to be honoured in hometown

Irish band Bagatelle will be honoured in their hometown of Bray, Co Wicklow this weekend with the unveiling of a commemorative bench on the town's seafront.

Bray County Council will dedicate the new bench to founding members Liam Reilly, who passed away in January 2021, aged 65, and John O’Brien, who scored hits with Summer in Dublin, Second Violin, and Trump Card, on Sunday at 4pm, followed by a performance from Bagatelle on the bandstand on Bray Seafront.

The unveiling will be carried out by Cathaoirleach Bray County Council Erica Doyle with Bagatelle founder member and bass player Ken Doyle.

The late Liam Reilly

Formed in Bray in 1978, Bagatelle, achieved several No.1 singles in Ireland, all written by the late Mr Reilly. They also played support to Bob Marley at his 1980 Dalymount Park show.

In 1990, Dundalk native Mr Reilly represented Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song, Somewhere in Europe. He came joint second with French entry Joëlle Ursull.

He also composed Ireland's Eurovision's entry in 1991, with Kim Jackson performing his song, Could It Be That I'm In Love, which placed tenth in the competition.

Following his death, TG4 aired the documentary, Bagatelle - Ómos do Liam Reilly, a year after his passing.

The remaining members of the band went back on the road to celebrate his life and his music and the Bagatelle legacy.
