Behind the music - ex-Five Star singer Deniece Pearson

Former Five Star lead singer Deniece Pearson has released her new single, Like a Child, ahead of her new album, Free~Queen~See, in December. We asked her the BIG questions . . .

Five Star had over 20 top thirty UK singles, including chart-toppers like System Addict, The Slightest Touch and Rain Or Shine.

They were the youngest British act to have a number one album, the first black group to win a BRIT (Best Group, 1987) as well as the first group to achieve seven consecutive hit singles from a single album in the UK.

Since the group's heyday, Deniece has raised kids, been on The Voice, had stints in the West End, and supported The Jacksons and Billy Ocean. She has now returned with new music in the lead up to her new album.

"I wanted to create a soothing soulful vibe for summer," she say. "I wanted my vocals on the verses to mimic and tribute Lisa Left Eye from TLC, who were one of my favourite groups in the 80s/90s along with other American female rappers like Monie Love and Queen Latifah. I'm excited to put this out to the world!"

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I love music, I'm a chocoholic and love interior design!

How would you describe your music?

I would describe my music as made for the majority of audiences, particularly those who like pop, R&B, soul rock and gospel.

Who are your musical inspirations?

I would most definitely say Smokey Robinson, India Ari, Michael Jackson, Chrystal Gail and Kim Burrell.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Haha, it was a Bobby Brown show! Lorraine invited him to our home in Sunningdale - we were invited to his show in London and I ended up walking out with my security guard when he came on stage in a white towel wrapped around his waist lol.

What was the first record you ever bought?

My first single I ever bought was You're the Voice by John Farnham. I was absolutely blown away by his range, his passion, structure of this song and, most importantly, the brilliant message he was putting across.

What’s your favourite song right now?

I tend to not listen to TV or radio in my home. I only listen to the classics, like Nat King Cole or Alexis Ffrench. India Ari is phenomenal though and I’m loving her self-improvement lyrics. She’s amazing.

Favourite lyric of all time?

Like A Child, if I may say so myself! I think it’s very important in this day and age, especially now that we have social media. It’s important to choose truth and honesty! Deception and lies are so easy but never have a good outcome.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Oh, that’s easy.. For You by Kenny Lattimore.
