The Domhnall Gleeson-starring comedy series The Paper, a spin-off of The US Office, has been renewed ahead of its premiere on the streaming service Peacock in the US on Thursday.
Reacting to the renewal during an interview with co-star Sabrina Impacciatore on the Today show on US television on Wednesday morning, Gleeson said: "It's wonderful news. We're very excited, very happy."
In The Paper, Gleeson plays Ned Sampson, the new editor-in-chief of The Toledo Truth-Teller, with Impacciatore playing the former boss, Esmeralda Grand.
"The documentary crew that immortalised Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch in the Emmy Award-winning series The Office find a new subject when they discover a historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it," says the synopsis.
Greg Daniels, who adapted Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's BBC series The Office for the US version, has co-created The Paper with Michael Koman (Nathan for You, Late Night with Conan O'Brien).
The cast also includes Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, and Tim Key, with Oscar Nuñez reprising his Office US role as accountant Oscar Martinez.
Speaking to US entertainment trade publication The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year, The Paper co-creator Greg Daniels said: "It's about this struggling Midwestern newspaper that's much reduced from its glory days.
"A lot of the storylines are about how Domhnall Gleeson's character is trying to restore this paper, and he just doesn't have the budget for hiring reporters, and he has to use all the staff that work there on a volunteer basis to be reporters.
"The villain here is the internet and the ability to look at everybody's news for free, and all the ad revenue going to Google."
