The Traitors Ireland host Siobhán McSweeney has joked that she is "scared to go home now", such is the level of coverage of the RTÉ One show.

The morning after the first episode of the new Irish TV phenomenon aired, the Derry Girls star joined RTÉ Radio 1's Oliver Callan Show on the phone from London.

The Traitors Ireland: Shock exits, family twists, and the first murder

Callan joked that McSweeney could be running for president, such is her level of exposure at home.

"I'm so mortified!" she said.

"It goes against every sort of impulse an Irish person has, doesn't it? To be plastered all over the place...

"I'm sick of myself! I can't imagine what the rest of the country is feeling! I'm too scared to go home now! It's like, 'God almighty! Is she here again?!' A friend sent me a text - he said he opened the fridge and I was in there with the wolfhounds!"

The Co Cork actor described The Traitors franchise as "quite a camp little show".

"So we thought we'd bring some glorious, outrageous iconography that is so identifiably Irish, and of course, you need to have a wolfhound there."

"It was marvellous; I was so happy with the wolfhounds," she said of her co-stars. "There was one bold fella - he wouldn't do anything we asked him to do! He was my favourite. He was my spirit animal."

Discussing The Traitors Ireland's uniqueness, McSweeney told Callan: "One of the people involved in the franchise of the show was quite amused over how quickly everybody started chatting to each other when the contestants came in.

"That usually takes a while for people in other countries to warm up and whatever. But not in Slane - they were chatting away to each other and accusing each other before they had even sat down for the first cup of tea!"

Giving little away about the contestants, McSweeney said "there's a lot of cuteness".

"I'm always surprised when people say that Ireland's such a friendly place and you're like, 'Hmmm, we're smiling... I wouldn't turn my back on anyone!'"

McSweeney revealed that she becomes "Lady Muck" to get into character in Slane Castle.

"It's far from a castle I was reared now, I'll tell you!" she laughed.

"Everyone, including the contestants and the amazing production people from Kite Entertainment, who were really extraordinary, we were all flying by the seat of our pants.

"It's the most remarkable thing I've ever worked on, because you never know what's going to happen from day to day."

"You have this kind of Irish matriarch feeling to it... I mean, you could be a pagan queen, but you could also be the chair of a Tidy Towns committee!" suggested Callan.

"Which is totally where I think pagan queens should reside!" McSweeney replied.

McSweeney said it had been "a real pinch-me" moment driving into Slane Castle for the first day of filming, as the last time she had been there was "falling off a bus" as a teenager for the REM concert in 1995.

"You're in a great moment in your career, aren't you?" said Callan.

"Oh sure, it's downhill from here!" said McSweeney.

"If we are going to go into the Irish exceptionalism, we're great begrudgers, so I'm just waiting for the entire nation to turn on me! And you know what? I wouldn't blame ye!"
