A Northern Ireland musician has set a new Guinness World Record after busking continuously for more than 24 hours in Armagh.

Martin Rafferty began playing at the bandstand on Market Street at midday on Wednesday, 27 August, and continued until 6pm on Thursday, 28 August. His 30-hour session beat the previous official record of 24 hours, as well as the unofficial record of 26 hours.

"We're just going to go the whole hog now and go for 30 hours and completely wipe the two of them out," Rafferty told the crowd after reaching the 24-hour mark.

The music teacher had to follow strict rules, including not repeating a song within four hours. Each track also had to last more than two-and-a-half minutes, and the entire performance was recorded as evidence.

The marathon session is raising money for the West Armagh Consortium’s Secret Santa Toy Appeal, which supports low-income families.

Among the songs Rafferty performed were Solomon Burke’s Cry To Me, Don McLean’s American Pie and David Gray’s Babylon.
