Young Irish actor Flynn Gray has joined the cast of the upcoming Star Wars film, Star Wars: Starfighter, Walt Disney has announced.

Announcing the young Dubliner's casting, Disney unit Lucasfilm shared a photo of him alongside Ryan Gosling, who will play the lead role in Starfighter, with the classic Star Wars vehicle the Landspeeder also in the shot.

14-year-old Gray's credits include the film Baltimore and the Irish TV series Borderline. He also features in several episodes of the worldwide hit Netflix show, Wednesday.

Gray, will also be the star of RTÉ's upcoming Young People's series called, Show Kids, which is due to air next month. It will air on Sunday, 14 September on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player at 5.10pm.

Six-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams (American Hustle, Vice, The Fighter) and former Doctor Who star Matt Smith are also part of the cast of Star Wars: Starfighter, which is set to reach cinemas in May 2027.

The film's other actors include Mia Goth (Pearl), Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge), and Simon Bird (The Inbetweeners).

Star Wars: Starfighter has begun production in the UK and is directed by Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine, Stranger Things, Night at the Museum).

"I feel a profound sense of excitement and honour as we begin production on Star Wars: Starfighter," said director Levy.

"From the day Kathy Kennedy (producer) called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally.

Star Wars, created by George Lucas, is one of the most successful film franchises of all time.

The films have collected more than $5 billion in global ticket sales since the release of the first instalment in 1977.

Starfighter is a standalone story in a time period that has not been previously explored in Star Wars films, Disney said.
