Actor Micheal Ward has been granted bail after appearing at Thames Magistrates' Court charged with rape and sexual assault.

The BAFTA-winning actor, who is best know for roles in shows and films including Top Boy, Small Axe and Blue Story, faces two counts of rape, two counts of assault by penetration and count of sexual assault.

The alleged offences relate to one woman and are said to have taken place in January 2023, according to the Metropolitan Police and Crown Prosecution.

Mr Ward appeared at Thames Magistrates' Court on Thursday where he spoke to confirm his name, address and date of birth during a short hearing.

He did not enter any pleas and was granted conditional bail to next appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court on 25 September.

His condition is not to contact the alleged victim.

In a statement issued when the charges were announced, Mr Ward said: "I deny the charges against me entirely," adding that he had cooperated fully with the police and had full faith that the process would clear his name.

Police said specialist officers are supporting the woman who came forward.

The Jamaican-born actor was awarded the BAFTA Rising Star honour in 2020 and was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Bafta for his role in BBC's Small Axe in 2021 and the 2022 film Empire Of Light.

He is currently starring in the film, Eddington, alongside Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal.
