Tell us three things about yourself . . .
My name is emily jane and I am a singer and composer from Galway.
I love lots of different kinds of music but I grew up listening to groove, funk and disco and I think that's why I’m so happy all the time!
From the age of five I had always wanted to be an actor both on stage and on screen. It wasn’t until I was 20 that I thought about pursuing music
How would you describe your music?
My music is definitely quite varied. Each of my songs has taken different inspirations but the most prominent themes would be contemporary jazz, atmospheric soundscape and emotive. The goal of each song is to allow the listener to really feel the emotion of the song.
Who are your musical inspirations?
My main inspirations would definitely be Erykah Badu, Hiatus Kiayote and Jamiroquai. I am obsessed with all of these artists and they have all been my favourite artists for years and years. I also love Ella Fitzgerald and the legend that is CMAT.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
My first gig ever was actually Erykah Badu when I was nine years old. My mom was a huge fan and brought me to see her in Luca, Italy. Like a week later I got to see Roy Ayres and Chaka Khan at the Perugia Jazz Festival, so it was a really, really cool trip for a nine year old.
What was the first record you ever bought?
My first record was technically a DVD but it was the ABBA Gold album. It was incredible because it had all of the music videos and I think I watched it every single day for at least a year. You could not stop me listening to ABBA as a kid.
What’s your favourite song right now?
My favourite song right now is FLY by Spectrum. It is just such a fun and happy song.
Favourite lyric of all time?
I swear I don’t have notions but my favourite lyric is one I wrote. It was very cathartic to write it and I really love singing it! "I now have what I never had, something always there, it was me" - Run For Me by emily jane.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
This is super tricky but either Sparkle Tape Break Up by Hiatus Kiayote or FLY by Spectrum. I’m sorry I can’t pick!
