Tributes have been paid to the guitarist and singer Brent Hinds, best known for his work with the heavy metal band Mastodon, following his death in a motorcycle crash in the US.

Hinds, who was 51, died in Atlanta, Georgia on Wednesday night in a crash involving his motorcycle and a car.

His death was later confirmed by the Fulton County medical examiner's office.

In a post on Instagram, Mastodon said: "We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief… last night (Wednesday) Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident.

"We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we've shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many.

"Our hearts are with Brent's family, friends, and fans. At this time, we please ask that you respect everyone's privacy during this difficult time."

Born William Brent Hinds in Helena, Alabama in 1974, Hinds co-founded the Grammy Award-winning Mastodon in 2000 alongside singer and bassist Troy Sanders, guitarist Bill Kelliher, and drummer and singer Brann Dailor.

He played on all of Mastodon's albums from their 2002 debut, Remission, to their most recent album, 2021's Hushed and Grim.

Hinds's exit from Mastodon was announced earlier this year.
