A New Mexico judge has dismissed Alec Baldwin's civil lawsuit alleging malicious prosecution and defamation in connection with the on-set shooting of Rust.
Judge Casey Fitch ruled that no "significant action" had occurred in the suit over more than 180 days, ordering the case dismissed without prejudice. The dismissal allows any party to apply to reinstate the case within 30 days of the ruling.
Baldwin filed the suit in January 2025 against special prosecutor Kari Morrissey, Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack‑Altwies, sheriff’s investigators and county officials.
He accused them of conspiring to pursue criminal charges for political or personal gain, mishandling evidence and defaming him after involuntary manslaughter charges were dropped in July 2024.
His lead counsel, Luke Nikas, said settlement talks are ongoing and that the suit may be refiled if no resolution is reached.
