The stars of Happy Gilmore 2 hit the green carpet in New York on Monday (July 21) to celebrate the film's upcoming release as Adam Sandler returns to the golf course as Happy Gilmore nearly 30 years after the original film.

Sandler is co-starring with his family alongside familiar faces from the first movie.

"My daughters are good," he said at the premiere. "They know what they're doing, they're working hard. They study and they want to get into this.

"So it's an honour to be with them and my wife's kickin' ass and having fun and we have nice times together making movies," Sandler said.

Also making appearances in the movie are singer Bad Bunny and American football star Travis Kelce.

The comedian revealed that it took roughly a year to come up with a solid script.

"We wrote a story with Carl Weathers. Unfortunately, Carl passed away and so we had to make a lot of adjustments and show the respect to the man. And we worked on the script, maybe a year, a year-and-a-half of trying to figure it out," Sandler added.

The film features numerous athletes, including veteran and current golfers including Bryson DeChambeau, who said the first film inspired him as a child.

"What Adam's done for the game 30 years ago inspired me to hit the ball really far. And now he's doing it again, hopefully inspiring a younger generation to go out and play golf. I couldn't love it more," said DeChambeau.

The film will begin streaming on Netflix on Friday July 25.
