Oasis made a triumphant return to their hometown of Manchester in nearly 16 years on Friday night.

Gallagher brothers Liam and Noel stepped onto the stage at Heaton Park to a roar of applause, kicking off the show with Hello from their smash-hit second album (What's the Story) Morning Glory? before Noel took over the mic to perform Acquiesce.

During the highly-anticipated show Noel dedicated Half The World Away to Royle Family stars Craig Cash and the late Caroline Aherne who died in 2016 following a battle with cancer.

The song was used as the theme tune for the beloved BBC sitcom, featuring Ricky Tomlinson and Sue Johnston.

Noel and Liam Gallagher's children reunited to watch Oasis with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola as the band made their long-awaited return to their home city.

More than 70,000 fans filled the venue for the Britpop band’s hotly anticipated gig.

Liam’s two sons Lennon, 25, and Gene, 24, and Noel’s three children Anais, 25, Donovan, 17 and Sonny, 14, were with Guardiola at the first of five sold-out shows.

Gene, whose mum is Liam’s ex-wife Nicole Appleton, shared the image to Instagram, with the caption: "Pic of the century alright now everyone els f*** off."

The 24-year-old has previously spoken of his friendship with his cousin Anais, and said: "We’re a big happy family."

His uncle Noel told crowds at the homecoming concert that he was aware that "the boss", referring to Guardiola, the manager of the football team he supports, was in attendance.

More than an hour before Oasis took to the stage, fans were filmed singing their own rendition of Live Forever.

In video footage posted on social media by the band Cast, one of the support acts, crowds belted the hit out as they awaited the Gallaghers’ arrival.

At about 8.20pm, the brothers walked onto the stage together to deafening cheers from crowds.

Liam held his older brother’s hand and raised it, while he had his trademark maracas in his other fist.

Greater Manchester Police said the event passed "without incident", although six men were arrested and in custody for a range of reasons including being drunk and disorderly and on suspicion of drug and fraud offences.

After kicking off their world tour in Cardiff last week, the group will return to their roots for five sold-out shows at Heaton Park in their home city.

Leading up to the concert, the city made it known that Gallagher bros were back after the tram network replaced its announcement voiceover at Heaton Park with Liam's voice on the concert dates.

The reunion announcement came after had Noel quit the Britpop band, saying he "simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer", following a backstage brawl at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris in 2009.

The brothers announced the Oasis Live ’25 tour last August, starting with two dates in Cardiff, before heading across the UK and Ireland, where they will play two dates at Dublin's Croke Park on August 16 and 17.

While fans were excited at the reunion, some were left outraged after some standard tickets in the UK and Ireland more than doubled from around €176 on pre-sale to over €400 on Ticketmaster.

The resulting backlash sparked probes into Ticketmaster - the official ticketing partner for the concerts - among British, Irish, and European regulators.

After their Manchester gigs Oasis will visit London’s Wembley Stadium, Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Stadium and Dublin’s Croke Park throughout July, August and September.

The group will then head to Japan, South Korea, South America, Australia and North America.

A movie produced by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight is being made in conjunction with the reunion tour.

Formed in Manchester in 1991, the rock band was led by lead guitarist Noel and his brother, lead vocalist Liam, during their 18 years together.

Oasis signed to independent record label Creation Records in 1993, rising to fame with the release of their debut chart-topping album Definitely Maybe on 29 August 1994.

They had hits with songs including Don’t Look Back In Anger, Champagne Supernova, Wonderwall and Live Forever.

Dig Out Your Soul, the band’s last studio album, was released in 2008, just months before the Paris row.
