Dystopian Novels is the solo project of Kieran Ring, the voice and creative force behind Irish indie rock outfit Neon Atlas.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I'm pretty quiet and definitely an introvert. I really enjoy my own company. Songwriting is my main creative outlet and the thing I love doing most. Spending a day in the studio, experimenting with sounds and building songs from scratch, is honestly my idea of a perfect day.

How would you describe your music?

It’s a mix of dream pop, synth-based textures, and indie rock. The early singles were definitely more on the melancholy side. I think I needed to get that mood out of my system! Lately, the music has shifted into something more guitar-driven and upbeat, but it still has that dreamy, atmospheric feel running through it.

Who are your musical inspirations?

For Dystopian Novels, I drew a lot of inspiration from bands like The National, Beach House, Cigarettes After Sex, and Sufjan Stevens. Growing up, artists like Kate Bush, Radiohead, and PJ Harvey really shaped how I think about music and storytelling in songs.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

My first gig was seeing the Cork band Rulers of the Planet in Whelan’s - still one of my favourite venues.

What was the first record you ever bought?

One of the first albums I bought was 1977 by Ash. I still love it. It brings me right back every time.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Bloom Baby Bloom by Wolf Alice - it’s an extraordinary track. I’m really looking forward to hearing what they do next.

Favourite lyric of all time?

"!You are more likely to be devoured than empowered by your own sense of romance". Save Your Secrets by The Cribs. That line has always stuck with me.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

PPP by Beach House. Their Depression Cherry album is a huge influence for me.

Where can people find your music/more information?

Spotify and YouTube.
