Daisy Edgar-Jones - Filming will reportedly begin on new version of romantic classic next month

Daisy Edgar-Jones is to play Elinor Dashwood in a new film adaptation of Jane Austen's classic romantic novel Sense and Sensibility.

The 1811 book tells the story of Dashwood sisters Elinor and Marianne and their once-wealthy family following the death of their father.

Georgia Oakley (Blue Jean) will direct a script by author Diana Reid (Signs of Damage, Love & Virtue, Seeing Other People).

No other casting details have been announced.

Writing on her Instagram account, Australian author Reid said filming would begin in July.

Entertainment trade publication The Hollywood Reporter says Focus Features and Working Title Films are behind "the fresh take", having previously made the 2020 adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma and the 2005 adaptation of Austen's Pride & Prejudice.

"It is astonishing that they trusted me with this novel, which means so much to so many people," wrote author Reid.

Emma Thompson previously played Elinor in director Ang Lee's 1995 film of Sense and Sensibility, with Thompson winning an Oscar for her screenplay.

Normal People star Edgar-Jones was most recently seen in the romantic drama On Swift Horses, based on the Shannon Pufahl novel of the same name.
