Lord Henry Mount Charles, custodian of Slane Castle and one of Ireland's most recognisable aristocrats, has died at the age of 74.

His family confirmed that he passed away peacefully on the night of 18 June, following a long battle with cancer. In a statement, they described him as a "beloved husband, father, grandfather, and custodian of Slane Castle," whose courage and spirit inspired all who knew him.

Best known for transforming Slane Castle into one of Ireland’s most iconic music venues, Lord Henry - formerly The Marquess Conyngham - helped establish the Co Meath estate as a cultural landmark. Under his leadership, Slane hosted legendary concerts by acts including U2, The Rolling Stones, and Madonna, drawing generations of music lovers to its natural amphitheatre by the River Boyne.

The family paid tribute to Lord Henry’s lifelong dedication to preserving Irish heritage and promoting the arts, describing him as a "passionate steward of Ireland’s heritage" whose warmth and humour left a lasting impression.

They also thanked the staff of St James’s Hospital and the many carers who supported him over the last decade, adding that funeral arrangements will be private.

Lord Henry is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.

He will be remembered not only for his role in Ireland’s music and cultural life but also for his generosity, resilience, and legacy at Slane.
