Pick of the Day

Not Going Out, 9.00pm, BBC One

Every time you think this comedy is done, they go and tweak it and here we go again.

The 14th season skips a few years and sees Lee and Lucy (Lee Mack and Sally Bretton, below) make plans to vacate their suburban 'empty nest' property now that their kids are grown up and gone.

The pair view a property that Lucy loves when, embarrassingly, Lee needs to go to the toilet.

Bbut before he can use it a second buyer turns up to take a look at the property. In order to dissuade him from putting in an offer, Lee pretends to be the vendor.

New to Stream

Anora, Sky Premiere

I seem to be in a minority of one as I was hugely disappointed by this drama when I saw it first time around.

Sean Baker's Academy Award and Palme d'Or winner is basically a variation on a modern-day Cinderella story.

Mikey Madison (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) tops the cast as Ani, a young sex worker from Brooklyn whose life takes an unexpected turn when she meets and impulsively marries Vanya, the impetuous son of a Russian billionaire.

Things turn sour when Vanya's parents catch wind of the union. As a result, they send their henchmen to annul the marriage, setting off a wild chase through the streets of New York.

Echo Valley, Apple TV+

In this thriller, Kate (Julianne Moore) is a mother struggling to make peace with her troubled daughter Claire (Sydney Sweeney).

It’s a situation that becomes even more perilous when Claire shows up on Kate’s doorstep, hysterical and covered in someone else’s blood.

As Kate pieces together the shocking truth of what happened, she learns just how far a mother will go to try to save her child.

Domhnall Gleeson is also in the cast, and has a role as villain Jackie Lawson in the acclaimed new thriller.

Not a Box, Apple TV+

This looks great!

Based on the award-winning childrens' book by The New York Times bestselling author Antoinette Portis, Not a Box encourages young audiences to tap into their creativity and embrace the power of imagination.

Voiced by Isabel Birch as Riley and Ian James Corlett as Adult, the eight-episode series invites young viewers and their families to step into a rich world of environments, characters and encounters that is as limitless as their imaginations to create, explore and celebrate.

Don’t Miss

The Power of Parker, 9.30pm, BBC One

It’s new character time in the second season of this Sian Gibson sitcom set in the 1990s.

Story-wise, Kath wakes up in Sandy's hotel room and tries to convince him to give Martin a job.

Martin and Diane both rush to Kath's aid, but things don't go to plan and they know they're all in deep trouble.

St Denis Medical, 10.40pm, BBC One

Typical. I forgot to record the opening episodes of this new US hospital-set sitcom when they landed on the Beeb last week. It's always a BBC show . . .

This week the staff's superstitions draw Ron's ire, leading him to declare a hex on the hospital in an attempt to prove such beliefs are nonsense.

Matt and Joyce discover that Chaplain Steve never attended divinity school and doesn't know the stories in the Bible.

Joyce has to fire him and Matt carry out the role until they can find a replacement.

Tom Jones at the BBC, 9.00pm, BBC Four

This opens a night of programming revolving around Jones the Voice.

Nothing new here – but plenty to enjoy.

First off, a celebration of the singer's performances, from the start of his career in the 1960s to his appearance on Later with Jools Holland just before he celebrated his 70th birthday in 2010.

At 9.55pm there’s Tom Jones: In Concert 1971, a performance by the singer, featuring appearances by the Treorchy Male Choir and the Blossoms.

Followed at 10.50pm by Tom Jones at Glastonbury, featuring footage of the singer's Sunday teatime slot on the Pyramid Stage at the 2009 festival

Finaly, at 11.50pm there’s the autobiographical Tom Jones' 1950s: The Decade That Made Me.

The era following the austerity of the Second World War saw a boom in popular culture, which swept aside the old order and ushered in a new era of entertainment.

The Zoo, 8.30pm, RTÉ One

Streaming on RTÉ Player

Zookeeper Julie travels to Monkey World in England to check in on SJ, Mujur the orangutan's hand-reared baby in its specialist crèche.

Ending Today

Alison Hammond’s Big Weekend, 8.30pm, BBC One

This show has worked as Alison Hammond’s empathy has helped to cut the ice with her celeb meet-ups.

To finish, the presenter spends a couple of days in the company of comedian and actor Lenny Henry, discussing his career, early fame and complex childhood, from losing his mother to discovering his biological father.

Their adventure kicks off in west London, where Lenny reveals one of his favourite Caribbean restaurants and favourite bookshop in the UK capital.

They then head to the West Midlands town of Dudley, where the pair visit his childhood home, a nearby park of sentimental importance, the town's market and one of his old haunts, the Lamp Tavern.

Sport

Live League of Ireland, 7.30pm,Virgin Media Two

After last week's international break, the League of Ireland returns to Virgin with all the action from the Premier Division match at Tolka Park as Shelbourne host Shamrock Rovers (KO 7.45pm) in the traditional Ringsend derby.

They may play in Drumcondra and Tallaght these days, but originally the Reds and the Hoops respectively began life on the west and east sides of Ringsend Bridge.

Shelbourne ended Rovers' run of four straight title wins last season, but they have struggled to find any consistent form so far this term and find themselves nine points off the pace.

That’s the distance they’re behind tonight’s opponents- and Stephen Bradley’s Hoops currently look to be the favourites to win the league once again.

But the teams could not be separated in the two previous meetings between them this season.
