Behind the music - Steady Flow

Steady Flow
Steady Flow

Waterford five-piece band Steady Flow have released their debut single, Summer Sun, from their upcoming self-titled debut EP. We asked them the BIG questions . . .

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

Alfonso Palma Sandoval (drums): I've been playing drums since I was four years old in Chile. I started by watching my brother, and then I followed after him.

Creativity is in my blood. For example, my mother makes incredible art with paint and wool.

I studied film at Pulse College in Dublin. My script, Bonded by Clay, was selected to be made into a short film with me producing, and we just finished shooting it.

How would you describe your music?

Alex Duplak (bass): Our music follows one rule: if it sounds good, it is good. Although most of it would fit into a category of alt rock/post punk, we all appreciate genres ranging from jazz and soul to prog rock and metal. We do try and keep the theme of our music cohesive when we play gigs or record music but overall, we like to experiment with most genres as there is beauty to be found in all of them.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Alex: This ties into my previous answer. The list ranges from Jimi Hendrix to Chet Baker, Tool, Gang of Four, The Arctic Monkeys and many more. Although the band I would relate to the most and find the most inspiration for ours would be The Stranglers as it encapsulates the post punk attitude with sophisticated keyboard melodies and clever writing.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Owen O’Brien (vocals, rhythm guitar): First ever gig I was at Korn was in 2004 with Static X supporting them. I would have been big into like the music off Scuzz, Kerrrang, MTV2 all the early noughties, late nineties, 80s rock, metal, grunge, started out with that and progressed on to anything and everything and whatever that makes wonderful music, all that kinda stuff now.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Adam Cooney (keys): Timeless by Desired in 2019. Bought second hand, in decent condition. Three years later they released the special edition, and I just had to have it. No doubt, one of my favourite albums.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Owen: White Male Privilege by Medium Build. That's what my song of the moment is. I relate to it a lot. I think it's why I've started screaming along in our songs; it brings out a lot of untapped emotions that I can't find a release for anywhere else.

Favourite lyric of all time?

Adam: "Almost blue, Almost doing things we used to do, There's a girl here and she's almost you, Almost." Written by Elvis Costello, covered by Chet Baker, this set of lyrics captured my heart at a pivotal time in my life. As a bit of a hopeless romantic, Chet hits that emotional sweet spot every time.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Alex Hayes (lead guitar): Electric Gypsy by Andy Timmons. Melodic, beautiful, tasteful and perfectly played. The song’s a masterpiece in the instrumental rock genre, firstly because it’s an actual song - it’s not merely a vehicle for Andy to demonstrate his technical prowess.

Where can people find your music/more information?

Instagram, Bandcamp, TikTok, YouTube, and basically anywhere you can stream music! We cannot overstate how proud we are of the work music we’ve created over the last 18 months.
