Heartbreak Vacation tells the true story of an artist's desperate attempt to remove herself from a toxic situation.
Written with producer/writer Mezz (James Blunt, Two Another) and up-and-coming pop star and songwriter Michaela, Heartbreak Vacation is the first of a run of singles that Jess Young will be releasing in 2025 and 2026.
Tell us three things about yourself . . .
I was raised in Kildare, learning classical piano and music. I cut my teeth singing in church and school choirs - and I was big into acting. Anything where I get to improve my performance and creativity, I'm game for.
I'm also launching a jewellery brand called Chau and consider myself an entrepreneur as well as an artist/singer-songwriter.
I cry every single time I watch Goo Goo Dolls play Iris live in Buffalo.
How would you describe your music?
Fierce, powerful female pop music. Playful, sultry and energetic. I'm definitely a grungy pop act with a twist of Americana and rock. I love to express all the parts and sides of me. I'm not just one thing on any given day. I'm a walking contradiction, and that's what my music shows too.
Who are your musical inspirations?
I grew up on The Eagles, Goo Goo Dolls, Bryan Adams, U2, Cindi Lauper, Blondie, The Corrs. A lot of amazing Irish bands are the backing track to my youth, but I got heavily into Americana and West Coast indie music and I 100% believe that the grungy, edgy music of my teenage years has given me this edge to how I write pop music. My biggest inspirations lately have been Dua Lipa, Miley Cyrus, Sam Fender and Dove Cameron.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
Boyzone in Dublin!! To be fair, it wouldn't be my first choice, but I was grateful to see them. But the latest show I went to was Eagles in Vegas. I cried for at least half the show. Seeing THE band that made me want to be a rock star (them and The Goo Goo Dolls) was emotional.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Savage Garden - Affirmation or might have been The Goo Goo Dolls - Dizzy Up The Girl.
What's your favourite song right now?
I've been rinsing Love Life by Sam Fender. Actually, I've been rinsing Sam Fender full stop.
Favourite lyric of all time?
"Sorrow drips into your heart through a pinhole, just like a faucet that leaks and there is comfort in the sound" - Death Cab for Cutie.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Eagles - Love Will Keep Us Alive. *starts weeping again . . . *
