Pick of the Day

Dept Q, Netflix

Matthew Goode heads the cast here that includes Chloe Pirrie, Alexej Manvelov, Kelly Macdonald and Leah Byrne.

The plot sounds a bit like Slow Horses. If it's even half as good, it’ll be worth a look.

Goode plays DCI Carl Morck, a brilliant cop but a terrible colleague. His razor-sharp sarcasm has made him no friends in Edinburgh police.

After a shooting that leaves a young pc dead, and his partner paralysed, he finds himself exiled to the basement and the sole member of Department Q - it's a newly formed cold case unit.

The department is a PR stunt, there to distract the public from the failures of an under-resourced, failing police force that is glad to see the back of him.

But more by accident than design, Morck starts to build a gang of unwanted cops who have everything to prove.

So, when the stone-cold trail of a prominent civil servant who disappeared several years ago starts to heat up, he's back doing what he does best - rattling cages and refusing to take no for an answer.

New or Returning Shows

Britain Under the Nazis: The Forgotten Occupation, 8.00pm, Channel 4

The first of a two-part documentary recounting how, in June 1940, Britain abandoned the Channel Islands - Guernsey (below), Jersey and Alderney - to Hitler's forces.

This decision meant leaving nearly 70,000 islanders facing the dilemma of collaborating with or resisting the occupying forces.

Mass deportations and slave labour camps were rolled out on British soil, and with no official investigation into the occupation, the fallout from the disarray remains toxic to this day.

Contributors help paint a shocking picture of a world of informants, collaborators, black marketeers and brave resisters.

The Split: Barcelona, 10.15pm, RTÉ One

First in a two-part special of the BBC’s legal drama, with Nicola Walker (who also stars in Annika at 11.15pm, straight after this) and Stephen Mangan, and guest starring Toby Stephens.

Hannah Defoe and her family have gathered for a wedding at a vineyard in Catalonia's wine region.

Over the course of one weekend, they have to contend with break-ups, reunions, the ghosts of Hannah's past, and the possibility of a fresh start.

Many of those carrying out the con are suffering too - at the hands of gangs behind this modern-day crime.

Capaillíní, 8.00pm, TTG4

New to Stream

The Better Sister, Prime Video

Based on the novel of the same name by bestselling author Alafair Burke, this is an eight-episode thriller about the terrible things that drive sisters apart and ultimately bring them back together.

Chloe (Jessica Biel), a high-profile media executive, lives a picturesque life with her handsome lawyer husband Adam (Corey Stoll) and teenage son Ethan (Maxwell Acee Donovan).

In stark contrast, her estranged sister Nicky (Elizabeth Banks) struggles to make ends meet and stay clean.

When Adam is brutally murdered, the prime suspect sends shockwaves through the family, reuniting the two sisters, as they try to untangle a complicated family history to discover the truth behind his death.

Adults, Disney+

This is an ensemble comedy series created by Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw about a group of friends in their twenties experiencing adulthood in Queens, New York – and trying to be good people.

In the pilot episode, the gang finds out that someone they know is making national headlines.

Whether it’s more Seinfeld, Girls or Friends depends. Fingers crossed it’s funny, at least.

Mad Unicorn, Netflix

Here’s what’s promising to be an intense Thai drama about an aspiring entrepreneur who breaks new ground with the launch of a startup courier service that brings new opportunities - and powerful enemies.

Apparently it’s based on a true story about an ordinary guy who had his idea nicked by some rich bloke. Same old story, eh?

But this time, the guy refuses to take it lying down and revenge is his compelling motivation.

Sounds soapy. Might be fun.

Don’t Miss

Poker Face, 9.00pm, Sky Max

Streaming on NOW

One of the plusses about this show is the guest star line-up. We’ve got two in this episode.

Story-wise, Natasha Lyonne’s murder-solving Charlie finds herself caught in a school kid's plot concerning the class pet.

Shown either side of Clint Eastwood (below) diverse WWII films Where Eagles Dare (7pm) and Kelly’s Heroes (10.30pm), this is part one of a two-part profile, made in 2000.

It focuses on his poverty-stricken childhood in 1930s’ California, early television success with Rawhide and subsequent film roles that turned him into an iconic superstar.

With contributions from luminaries, such as Rip Torn, Eli Wallach and directors Don Siegel, Sergio Leone and Martin Scorsese.

Interior Design Masters with Alan Carr, 8.00pm, BBC Two

Alan Carr (below) hosts as the two finalists head to the whimsical village of Portmeirion - where cult TV show The Prisoner was filmed - in Gwynedd to redesign two quirky cottages.

Taking inspiration from colourful buildings and spectacular scenery, they show Michelle Ogundehin and guest judge Sophie Robinson everything they have learned over the last eight weeks.

It’s all up for grabs as one of them will win the contest, which secures them a major collaboration contract for a range with retailer John Lewis.
