Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I’m obsessed with Russian literature; my artist name is based on the mythological rusalka (Slavic variation of a mermaid/siren). I even wrote a song (not recorded or released) based on a character from a Dostoevsky novel with whom I really resonated. I am a medical student, and I work part-time doing research in a neuroscience lab.

Even though I’m not Irish, the first word I learned how to spell was Guinness. I was two years old, on a family trip to Ireland, and apparently figured it out by reading off street signs!

How would you describe your music?

I would describe my style as contemporary, fluctuating between alt rock and indie pop depending on my inspiration.

Who are your musical inspirations?

So many… my own music was influenced by Meg Myers, Fiona Apple, and many of the newer Bond songs. Lyrically, I think Hozier, David Kushner, and Taylor Swift are brilliant songwriters, and I love early 2000s rock bands like My Chemical Romance, Three Days Grace, Evanescence, Green Day, and Black Veil Brides. But right now, I have to say Faouzia, her power, technique, and vocal control is unreal, and her Arabic influences add a whole new level of depth.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

American Idol world tour with my family.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Probably Hannah Montana (I was a little girl in the early 2000s).

What’s your favourite song right now?

Don’t Lose Your Heart by Dream on Dreamer.

Favourite lyric of all time?

"Our veins are busy but my heart’s in atrophy. Anyway, to distract and sedate, adding shadows to the walls of the cave." - Hozier.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Lacrymosa by Evanescence since I’m torn between rock and classical.

Where can people find your music/more information?

All my songs are on Spotify and other streaming services under RUSALKA, and my Instagram is @rusalkamusic.
