Irish actors Paul Mescal and Emma Canning stepped out at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday night, where their new film The History of Sound premiered.
Directed by Oliver Hermanus (Moffie, Beauty) and adapted by author Ben Shattuck from his short story of the same name, The History of Sound follows two young men, Lionel (Mescal) and David (Josh O'Connor), who, during the WWI period, set out to record the lives, voices and music of their countrymen.
According to Variety, the film earned a six-minute standing ovation at the film festival and left audience members "weeping and swatting at each other trying to get video of Mescal, who was also tearing up".

Director Hermanus told the publication: "This has been one of the most wonderful creative collaborations of my very, very short career, but this has been a testament to the genius of Paul Mescal."
Mescal donned an all-black, relaxed-fitting suit for the red carpet event, with a tie loosely slung around his neck.
The Normal People star's rumoured girlfriend, the singer Gracie Abrams, was in attendance at The History of Sound premiere, also wearing an all-black ensemble.
