Pick of the Day

Murderbot, Apple TV

Alexander Skarsgård stars in the title role in this science fiction action-comedy series that’s based on the book series The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells.

Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz are writing, directing and producing the series with Wells involved as a consulting producer.

It’s the story of a partly biological security cyborg that privately calls itself Murderbot that must hide its ability for free thought while completing dangerous assignments.

Murderbot is simultaneously drawn to humans and appalled at their weakness.

He should fit in nicely then.

New or Returning Shows

Alison Hammond’s Big Weekend, 8.30pm, BBC One

The increasingly ubiquitous TV presenter Alison Hammond takes the celebrity interview into a Lucy Kennedy direction as she spends two days with some of the UK's more familiar faces.

As you get in Living with Lucy, Hammond will be offering an exclusive glimpse into their homes and lives.

She begins with pop star Perrie Edwards, of Little Mix, who opens up about her home life, her struggles with anxiety and not being able to be alone.

Hidden Treasures of the National Trust, 9.00pm, BBC Two

As this fascinating series returns, cameras focus on houses that became retreats, and places of inspiration, for three literary legends.

At Hill Top (above), the Cumbria escape of Beatrix Potter, a collection of over 70 miniature pieces under the roof of the author's own dolls' house are undergoing major conservation before a new exhibition.

There's also a look at the woodland cottage of Clouds Hill, Dorset, a refuge for TE Lawrence.

There a mysterious painting belonging to the man better known as Lawrence of Arabia reveals its secrets.

New to Stream

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Sky Cinema Premiere & NOW

Beetlejuice is back! Unfortunately, this sequel isn’t a patch on the original.

And while it’s fun to see Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder back in their roles as the eponymous bio-exorcist and goth teen (now mother) Lydia, it’s a fairly tepid affair.

After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River.

Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia's life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened.

With trouble brewing in both realms, it's only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice's name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.

Hysteria, Paramount+

A pretty good cast - including Bruce Campbell and Julie Bowen - star in this comedy horror series.

In 1989 during the Satanic panic, a beloved varsity quarterback's disappearance causes whispers of occult activity and Satanic influence throughout the Detroit suburb of Happy Hollow, Michigan.

Dylan, Jordy and Spud, a trio of outcasts in a struggling heavy metal band called Dethkrunch, decide to capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by rebranding themselves as a Satanic metal band.

This leads to them becoming the targets of the town's witch hunt, especially when a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings and reported supernatural activity begin happening.

Welcome to Wrexham, Disney+

Here’s the fourth season of the Emmy Award-winning docuseries from Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, about the Welsh football club they bought and bankrolled.

The latest run of the show about the rejuvenated Wrexham begins with the first two episodes of the eight-episode season.

Since the 2020 takeover by the wealthy Hollywood stars, Wrexham has enjoyed back-to-back promotions to bring them into the English Football League’s League One (the third tier) for the first time in 20 years.

As they rise through the English football pyramid, the stakes get higher with a new level of intensity, competition and costs – but with multi-millionaire backers, the gravy days are set to continue.

Although this is painted as some kind of Cinderella, rags-to-riches tale, it’s really just a case of cash buying success.

Nothing new there. With very few exceptions, money always buys trophies in football.

Don’t Miss

Kate Bush at the BBC, 10.00pm, BBC Four

Another chance to see this broad compilation of the brilliant Kate Bush's performances at the BBC's studios between 1978 and 1994.

Bush appeared on a variety of programmes, including Top of the Pops, Wogan, Ask Aspel, Saturday Night at the Mill and the Leo Sayer Show.

Featuring the hits Wuthering Heights, Babooshka, Running Up That Hill and Hounds of Love, as well as intriguing and lesser-known material.

Mrs Harris Goes To Paris, 9.35pm, RTÉ One

This quirky comedy drama, starring Lesley Manville, Isabelle Huppert and Lambert Wilson, takes up the slot normally reserved for The Late Late Show.

Widowed cleaning lady Ada Harris (yet another great turn from Manville) fixates on a designer dress belonging to one of her clients.

A war widow's pension and a windfall secure an airplane ticket to Paris, and Ada innocently gate-crashes the premiere of Dior's 10th anniversary collection.

Ada winds up with a unique creation that requires an unexpected stay in the French capital.

Ending Today

Martin Clunes’ Islands of the Atlantic, 9.00pm, UTV

In the final episode, Martin Clunes (below) visits the windswept Faroe Islands and their dramatic cliffs that are home to thousands of colourful puffins, and the unique Faroese sheep breed.

He plunges into freezing waters to hunt for giant horse mussels and plays electric bass with a Viking metal star before exploring spectacular landscapes of calving glaciers and enormous icebergs in Greenland.

The actor also sees an ancient Inuit mask dance and ends with a trek on Greenland's permanent ice sheet with a climate change scientist.

Sport

League of Ireland, 7.30pm, Virgin Media Two

The Premier Division race is insane this season, with any one of eight clubs in with a chance of landing the ultimate prize in Irish football and Champions League qualification.

This week’s live game sees fourth hosting sixth as reigning champions Shelbourne make the short trip from Tolka to Dalymount Park (above) to face an in-form Bohemians.

Last week the Reds ended a poor run with a late winner against St Pat’s, while the Gypsies have turned late, game-changing goals into an art form. The last few minutes here could be hectic.

Also tonight: Rugbaí Beo (7.30pm, TG4) continues with Munster v Benetton (KO 8pm). Live coverage of the match in the United Rugby Championship, held at Virgin Media Park.
