Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I grew up surrounded by Irish traditional music - singing sean nós and spending my summers at fleadhs and music summer schools all around the country. The first instrument I picked up was the bodhrán, which I still play, before teaching myself guitar so I could back myself while singing.

Growing up in a small rural village, GAA was everything to me. I played all my teenage years for my local club Ballyncargy (small village outside Mullingar), a lot of school football for CBS Mullingar and then minor football for Westmeath.

I developed a huge love for American country/folk music over the years. I really believe that the similarities between American folk music and Irish folk is very strong.

How would you describe your music?

Personally, I don't like putting a label on my music, as everyone hears things differently, but if I had to say, it would be American country/folk, with a touch of Irish in the mix.

Who are your musical inspirations?

I have a lot of musical inspirations. To name a few off the top of my head, I would say, Tyler Childers, Jason isbell, Chris Stapleton, Hozier, Post Malone, Foy Vance, Luke Kelly, Zach Bryan, Colter Wall, Ernest, Sam Fender, Bruce Springsteen, I could go on all day but for me they would be the top few that I get most of my inspiration from and all very unique in their own way.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

First concert I ever went to was Passenger in Vicar Street, I think it was back in 2015/2016.

What was the first record you ever bought?

The first record I ever bought (got my ma to buy it for me ) was a Very Best of Dubliners CD. I used to sit in my ma’s car and sit in it for hours listening to it over and over again learning the songs by ear.

What’s your favourite song right now?

That’s a very hard question, but the right now I’m really loving a song called Lyin’ Low by Charles Wesley Godwin.

Favourite lyric of all time?

"I got too far from my raising and I forgot where I came from, and the line between right and wrong was so fine. Well, I thought the highway loved me, but she beat me like a drum, my day will come if it takes a lifetime" - If it Takes a Lifetime by Jason Isbell.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

The one song I could listen to over and over again is Luke Kelly’s The Night Visiting Song. Especially that last time he sang it on The Late Late Show, which, if I’m not mistaken, ended up being his last live performance. For me, it’s the best performance I’ve ever seen. It still gives me goosebumps every time I watch it.
