Behind the music - Hanabie

Hanabie
Hanabie

Tokyo-based all-girl rock band Hanabie play The Academy, Dublin on 4 November. We asked Yukina of the band the BIG questions . . .

The band formed in 2015 when Yukina, Matsuri, and Hettsu came together for a high school club activity. They were joined by fourth member Chika in 2023.

In December 2024, Hanabie released their latest EP, Bucchigiri Tokyo, and last August they made history when they became their first Japanese women to perform on the main stage at Lollapalooza in Chicago.

Tickets for the band's Academy Show are priced from €33.65 and are on sale now.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I do the shout part as the HANABIE. I love cats. Usually, I’m pretty easy-going and have my own pace.

How would you describe your music?

We pack in everything we want to do and express it in a pop and chaotic way! Sometimes we overthink and it gets tricky, but we’re always excited about it.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Maximum the Hormone is the reason why we got together as a band. If we hadn’t come across this band, HANABIE might not even exist. That’s how much influence they’ve had on us in so many ways.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

The first gig I ever went to is Japanese rock band Hysteric Panic headliner show. I went alone to the live house with a capacity of about 900 people, and I still remember how nervous I was since I was only in high school at the time.

What was the first record you ever bought?

The first CD I ever bought was Ai am BEST by Ai Otsuka when I was in grade school.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Sabrina Carpenter’s 15 Minutes. I love her not just for this song, but as an artist overall. While on tour overseas, I recharge by picking up her collab merch with different fashion brands - stuff you can’t find in Japan!"

Favourite lyric of all time?

UVERworld’s THEORY. I can relate to every word in the lyrics - it really gives me a lot of strength.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

It’s a tough choice, but I’ll go with one of our own songs. Pardon Me, I Have to Go Now.

Where can people find your music/more information?

We share updates on all our social media but be sure to check out our official website too! There’s an English version available as well for our international fans.
